Gotham City ( ), or simply Gotham, is a fictional American city appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics, best known as the home of Batman. Gotham City was first identified as Batman's place of residence in Batman #4 (December 1940) and has since been the setting of most stories featuring the character. The city is depicted as being in close proximity to Metropolis, with the vast majority of DC Comics references placing Gotham City specifically in the state of New Jersey. New York City, which borders New Jersey, and Chicago have also influenced the look and feel of Gotham over the years. Within the DC Extended Universe, the 2016 film Suicide Squad reveals Gotham City to be located in New Jersey. Locations used as inspiration or filming locations for Gotham City in the live-action Batman films and television series have included Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, New Jersey and New York City.
